Tunquén Houses

Tunquén, Algarrobo, Chile · 2024

Two second-home houses in Tunquén, on the Chilean coast. Elongated volumes set on a steeply sloped site, oriented to capture the ocean view.

The brief calls for two second-home houses in the Campomar sector of Tunquén, on a steeply sloped site with height restrictions. The challenge was to maximise the ocean view within the regulatory limits.

The strategy resolves the pair as two elongated volumes that share a common architectural language while responding individually to each client. Their plan layout follows the natural contours of the terrain, minimising earthworks and embedding the houses into the natural profile of the site.

The upper floors are deliberately oriented toward the sea, concentrating the main rooms there and using the slope itself as a tool for privacy and outlook. Terraces and cantilevers project life outward into the landscape, offering varied planes of relationship with the coastal horizon.

Developed in collaboration with architect Erick Marin.
