Piedra Roja House
Piedra Roja, Chicureo, Chile · 2025
Extension and interior renovation of a house in Piedra Roja, Chicureo. Kitchen, service zone and an inner courtyard are reorganised around natural light, opening the home to a new outdoor threshold beneath a timber-batten pergola.
A precise, focused intervention: remodel the kitchen, restructure the service zone and open the house toward an inner courtyard, with the goal of raising natural light and functionality in the rooms the family uses most.
The kitchen is reorganised to flow toward the social spaces, expanding the sense of spatial continuity. Two skylights above the counter and the service corridor bring zenithal light directly onto the work surface, keeping the kitchen daylit without artificial sources. Daily circulation, storage capacity and visual connection with the rest of the house are all improved.
Outdoors, a timber-batten pergola defines a new semi-covered threshold between the house and the garden. The rhythm of the slats casts linear shadows on the stone floor and modulates the daylight, producing a slow transition between inside and out. A second interior courtyard, planted with ornamental grasses and a palm, articulates the core of the plan and delivers air and light to the rooms at the back.
Materiality organises the project in two registers: clean whites and pale woods in kitchen, dressing room and dining area; grey marble and hexagonal tile in wet zones. The dining room is separated from the kitchen by a wall clad in vertical timber slats and glazed doors with black steel frames — a pivot piece that gives identity to the ground floor. Joinery is custom-made by Moderna Design, ensuring construction quality aligned with the design and a precise finish in every detail.
